Also known as Syzgium aromaticum, the cloves come from a tree where its flower buds are dried to produce this popular spice. It is native in India and Indonesia, it can also be found in Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Zanzibar and Madagascar. It is utilized throughout the world's cuisine and this is the mot commonly used spice. It can be added to tea to liven it up, as well as heated fruit and wine punches that use cranberry for a flavor base. Caribbean jerk seasoning also takes advantage of the aromatic pungency of this spice, typically combined with citrus juice to deliver the desired tropical result. RECIPE

 With its spicy taste and aromatic smell, no wonder Cloves are mostly used in almost every food out there, and certainly it is best in desserts. Try this Old Fashioned Gingerbread with clove powder.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup molasses
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp cinnamon powder
  • 1 tsp ginger powder
  • 1/2 tsp clove powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup hot water

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit, grease and flour a 9-inch square pan.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the sugar and butter. beat in the egg, and in the molasses.
  3. In a bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, ginger and cloves. Blend into the creamed mixture. Stir in the hot water. Pour into the prepared pan.
  4. Bake for 1 hour in the preheated oven, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  5. Allow to cool in pan before serving.
