Also called bastard cardamom, Malabar cardamom and Elettaria cardamom, the seeds of the Cardamom are commonly used to flavor coffee, curry blends and Scandinavian breads. It is a member of the Zingiberaceae family, this sweetly aromatic cardamom is the fruit of a tropical plant related to ginger, and it is one of the world's most expensive spices, after saffron and vanilla. This is an essential ingredient to the cuisines of the Middle East and Scandinavia, while Cardamom coffee or gahwa is a symbol of Arab hospitality. In India, the Cardamom is know the "Queen of Spices" to black pepper's title as the "King of Spices".
