In this blog, we will be discussing the difference between organic and GMO products and their effects to the environment.

Organic vs GMO: Facts

People sometimes confuse whether a product is organic or GMO, it is important to understand the difference between the two. Organic Food, is produced without the conventional pesticides, synthetic fertilizers or any kind of bioengineering in order to boost the crop. Animals that were not given any antibiotics or growth hormones produce organic meat, eggs and even dairy products. But some people wonder if organic foods are Non-GMO as sometimes food labels can be confusing. First you must understand what GMO is, it means Genetically Modified Organism. Organic foods are not genetically modified, hence organic foods are non-GMO. Field crops that are GMO or genetically altered to make them more resistant to insects, and some fruits and vegetables that are genetically altered to give them a much longer shelf lives.

Organic vs GMO: How they are cultivated

Crops have many ways to cultivate to boost their harvest, but some ways are harmful not just to the consumers but also to the environment. Organic food contains fewer pesticides, this is because this is because these products were grown using natural based fertilizers and animals are fed with crops grown organically, so products from animals contain less to no chemicals. While GMO products are those that were genetically altered to improve crop protection, this is achieved by incorporating into the food the for toxin production from the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt). Their DNA has been modified in ways that do not occur naturally. Most commonly found in crops such as soybeans, corn and canola.

Organic vs GMO: Pros and Cons

Both products are in ways have their pros and cons. This is to say that one is better than the other, but with all their differences, one must be careful what you put inside your body. Organic products, since they are grown organically with no chemicals, they are better for the environment as toxic chemicals used in the production of GMO products could harm the land and the resources. Organic foods are fresher than GMO foods as they don’t contain preservations, so they are sold at the peak of the freshness, to which GMO foods have preservatives giving them a longer shelf lives, which makes it ideal for people that would stock up for weeks or months. Because they are grown organically, Organic foods tend to cost higher than those of the GMO which is lower in price since they are genetically modified, production is faster and lower cost, while organic foods may take some time since they use on the natural fertilizers and some natural fertilizers cost more than those of the synthetic ones. You can be sure that organic foods contain no modified organisms or any growth hormones, while GMO their genes were modified to increase resistance against insects and viruses and to make them durable.

With all their difference, you as the consumer must be the one to choose which one is better for you, the one grown organically and used only the natural fertilizers, or the foods that were genetically modified and contains chemicals that may be harmful to you. Although these chemicals may not show their effects right after you take them, but in the long run, they may have indirect effects in your health such as allergens and other complications. So at the end of the day, you as the consumer will be the one to decide which is better for your body and your health. As for Eherbz, we believe that consuming organic products is a better way to live a healthy lifestyle.
